The concept of “Ish”

Let’s talk about “ish.”  If you have been to England you may have heard a sentence that goes something like this:

“Hi mate, when shall we meet at the pub tonight?”
“I don’t know how about tonight at nineish.”

Are you hungry?

Yes, hungryish.  (I am a little hungry.)

What does this “Ish” word mean exactly?

You use it when you are not sure about something.

Let’s say for example you are having a busy day at work, you are having a busy day at work, you know that you are going to finish at about 7 o’clock but you are not sure exactly what time you will get home.

You may say to your mother I will get home at bout seven thirty ish.

Meaning: to make something unpleasant more easy to cope with

Example sentence: I have to tell my mom about wrecking her car, but I need to find a way to sugar the pill.

People In Glass Houses Shouldn’t throw Stones.

Meaning: You should not cliticise others when you have similar problems yourself.

Example situation:  

If you do not have a job, you should not make fun of someone else who also does not have a job.

Take A Chill Pill　　

Meaning: You need to calm down.

Example sentence:   You are very stressed right now you need to take a chill pill and calm down.

The pot calling the kettle black

Meaning: We use this saying ABOUT someone who has accused you of diong something wrong, when it is them who has done the same wrong thing. (I think you are calling the kettle black.)

It can also be used by someone TO YOU if you have accused someone of doing something you yourself have done.

Put simply: accusing someone of doing something that you have done yourself.

 Have you ever heard this saying before?

“Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!” is what you may have heard.

Here is an example situation

Let’s say that someone is calling you mean names at work or school, however, you have called that person a mean name before. You go to the theacher/boss and tell them that you are being called names but the teacher/boss know that you have also been name calling. The teacher/boss may say, “I think this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.”

Don’t Poke The Hornets Nest.

Meaning:   Do not make an angry person even angrier. 

Example situation: If you have forgotten it was your wedding anniversary your wife/husband will be angry. Do not make them even more angry by complaining about a busy day you had at work.

Do not make a bad situation even worse.

Not For All The Tea In China

Meaning: There is no possible way that I am going to do what you want me to do.

Example:

person A:   Why don’t we stay in that haunted house overnight?

 Person B:   No way! Not for all the tea in China!

  = There is no way I am going to do that.

Too Many Cooks Spoil The Broth

Meaning: If too many people work on one small task it will not be done well.  

For Example:

“Let’s all five of us work on writing this essay!”

“Oh no if we all contribute the opinions may get confusing, too many cooks spoil the broth you know.”
