The concept of “Ish”

Let’s talk about “ish.”  If you have been to England you may have heard a sentence that goes something like this:

“Hi mate, when shall we meet at the pub tonight?”
“I don’t know how about tonight at nineish.”

Are you hungry?

Yes, hungryish.  (I am a little hungry.)

What does this “Ish” word mean exactly?

You use it when you are not sure about something.

Let’s say for example you are having a busy day at work, you are having a busy day at work, you know that you are going to finish at about 7 o’clock but you are not sure exactly what time you will get home.

You may say to your mother I will get home at bout seven thirty ish.

That if the Brithish concept of ISH.

Example sentence: I have to tell my mom about wrecking her car, but I need to find a way to sugar the pill.

こんにちは、ニワトリです。グローバルイングリッシュアカデミーでモリンガの成長をなまあたたかく見守っている私が、「今日のモリンガ」をお送りいたします。10／3に種を植えてから15日後、10/18にこの写真を掲載しましたが、その後どうなったのでしょうか。きになりますよね～（ならんとか言わないでお付き合いください。。。）

まだまだカイワレでも出荷できないサイズでしたが、その後、瞬く間に成長いたしまして、今では植え替えてこのようになっております。ニワトリが見守っております。

とある月曜日、出勤してきたスタッフが、コピー機に向かって深々とお辞儀をしているモリンガたちにびっくり仰天、あわてて水を与えて、お日様にあてましたところ、なんとかコピー機崇拝から脱出できたようで、現在は上を向いてしっかり成長していこうとしています。それにしても、カイワレのようなヒョロヒョロした状態のため、何かの拍子に折れてしまいはしないかとても心配しております。倉敷はそれほど寒い土地ではないとはいえ、最近はめっきり寒くなってまいりました。

セブ島のような、年間を通して20度をくだらないような気候条件で育てることが出来ないのですが、なんとか冬季も5度を下回らないよう、工夫をして大事に育ててまいりますので、中庄 教室にお越しのさいはぜひモリンガの様子をお尋ねくださいね！もちろん、英語で、どうぞ！

Spooktacular Halloween!!! Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Some people wear scary costumes, imitate ghosts movements and roam off. May our thoughts of Halloween is always nerve-racking happenings and incidents like dead waking up from coffin, possession, seeing spine-chilling ghosts, coming out of creepy creatures from nowhere and many more, but this days we celebrate Halloween as fun and exciting as it could be. Children would love to do the trick or treat. It is also common these days to hold a party which everyone wears costumes. Last year, I had enjoyed Halloween party with kids. Everyone were so cute with their different styles. It was very enjoyable. So, have a spooky, creepy Halloween everyone!!! whoahahahhahah Please share your scary photos!!! Challenge accepted. >:

これは、この五月に私がセブ島に行った際に撮った水中写真です。野性のジンベイザメです。

ジンベイザメ、英語でwhale sharkと呼ばれるサメは、魚類最大と言われます。その大きな体と美しい斑点模様で水族館の人気者になったりしていますが、そのジンベイザメと一緒に泳ぐことが出来る場所が世界でただひとつあることをご存知でしょうか。

「サメと泳ぐだって？！とんでもない！（恐）」と思われる方もいらっしゃるかと思いますが、安心してください。このサメは、オキアミや小魚などを食糧にしているとてもおとなしいサメなのです。

これがジンベイサメの口です。いわゆるサメ、JAWSで有名になったホオジロザメなどの口とくらべてみてください。

こうして拡大してみると、まるでおたまじゃくしのように見えませんか？（わたしだけ？！）

これはジンベイザメが餌を食べるために口を開けて吸い込んでいるところです。海水と共に、オキアミやシラスなどを吸い込み、エラから水だけを排出します。

エラがみえますでしょうか？他のサメもこんな感じで胴部の両脇にありますよね。これらをオープン、クローズを繰り返して、ヒラヒラ動いているのをみましたが、けなげに生きているのね～というベタな感想を持ちました。

説明が遅くなりましたが、フィリピンのセブ島には、世界で唯一、野生のジンベイザメと一緒に泳げる場所があるのです。セブ市から海岸線沿いにバスで南に下ること約4時間の、オスロブという小さな漁村です。

なぜこの漁村でジンベイザメと泳げるのか。それは、漁師さんたちが魚網をジンベイザメにやぶられて苦労していたことから、どうすればお互いが共存できるのかを考えた挙句のことだったそうです。

毎朝9時ごろから、漁師さんたちが湾の決まった場所で餌付けをして、その結果、ジンベイザメが漁場を荒らすことなく、魚網を破ることもなくなったとのこと、さらに、ジンベイザメが集まってくるということが世界中に広く知れ渡り、いまでは観光資源にもなっているのです。

スタッフブログのしょっぱなから、わけの分からない話ですみません。ただいま、グローバルイングリッシュアカデミー岡山校の休憩スペースでモリンガの栽培を試みております。

そもそも、モリンガって何？と思われている方、ぜひググッてみてくださいね。フィリピンでは普通に家の垣根などに植えられている植物で、2ｍくらいまでの高さに成長する木だそうです。もともとインド原産で、アユルヴェーダにも記載ある薬草のようです（と、どこかにかいてありました）。効能はググるといろいろ出てきます。セブ島近辺では、葉っぱを料理に使ったり、種を煎じて飲んだり、茎を、種の鞘を、と食用に民間療法にと捨てるところなく利用されているそうです。ちなみにモリンガはインドの呼称だそうで、タガログ語ではマルンガイmalunggay、セブ島周辺の言葉セブアノ語ではカラムンガイkalamungayと呼ばれているそうです。熱帯の植物だけに、倉敷の、なおかつ室内で栽培はどこまでできるのか、ゆるゆると見守っていきたいと思います。
